What’s In A Name of the Day: A French couple brought before a judge for naming their newborn after a Vampire Diaries character have had the charges against them dropped.
The parents, Lionel and Blandine Defontaine, sought to name their infant son Daemon, after vampire anti-hero Damon Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder.
Prosecutors charged them under a law that would bar them from giving their child a name “contrary to its interests.” A judge ruled against the prosecutors after the Defontaines denied selecting the name for its “satanic connotation,” adding that they simply liked how it sounds.
Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev took issue with the incident, tweeting: “In France people get prosecuted for naming their kid after Damon. And yet here ‘Blue Ivy’ and ‘Apple’ are a big hit.”
